Irish Cod Might Be A Hake

Chippies, restaurants and fishmongers are amongst those who've been found to be passing lower priced products under the guise of premium meat and fish in various surveys carried out over the UK and Ireland.

In the Irish Republic a second survey found that up to 19% of the fish they examined wasn't what it claimed to be. The survey, carried out by the Irish Food Safety Authority (FSAI) followed a previous examination by University College Dublin which found that, last year, large quantities of fish were mislabelled. The FSAI found that fish and chip shops were the worst culprits with as many as a third of them selling cheaper species of fish as higher priced varieties such as cod.
