Irish Cod Might Be A Hake

Chippies, restaurants and fishmongers are amongst those who've been found to be passing lower priced products under the guise of premium meat and fish in various surveys carried out over the UK and Ireland.

In the Irish Republic a second survey found that up to 19% of the fish they examined wasn't what it claimed to be. The survey, carried out by the Irish Food Safety Authority (FSAI) followed a previous examination by University College Dublin which found that, last year, large quantities of fish were mislabelled. The FSAI found that fish and chip shops were the worst culprits with as many as a third of them selling cheaper species of fish as higher priced varieties such as cod.

Instead of getting cod, a fish which is expensive as it is becoming rarer and rarer in the seas around the British Isles, restaurants were passing off Pollock, hake smelt and haddock to customers. The Chief Executive of the FSAI, Alan Reilly, stated that restaurants were improving their profit margins by selling the cheaper fish and misleading customers, either accidentally or deliberately. This is against the rights of the consumer under European and Irish law.

Two particular suppliers' names came up during the investigations into origin. Checks and further investigations are underway to see if the mislabelling occurred at the supply level or at the retail side of the supply chain.

Consumers don't need to be worried that there are any health and safety implications with being mis-sold lower priced fish, there were no concerns over quality, only the varieties being distributed. The important thing, as far as the FSAI was concerned, they just wanted consumers to be confident that he fish they were buying was the fish they were getting.

If cod is being replaced by more common species of fish and customers are unable to tell the difference then surely they aught to be asking for the cheaper varieties. If these species are easier to catch, of the same quality then people should choose the other options and give stocks of cod a chance to recover. In doing this they will also bring the cost of cod down as they increase their numbers. Just a thought.

You won't find any of that kind of hakery in indian takeaway bristol. Not on your nelly. nor in food delivery sheffield. There are also measures to prevent this kind of thing in Southampton delivery.
